About Us

The World Next Door is an extension of our lives.

We enjoy traveling, learning about other cultures and teaching our kids about global issues. We believe the world is a fascinating place full of a vast array of beauty in both people and nature. We also know that half the world lives in extreme poverty and that a shocking number of children are dying everyday from things like malnutrition, lack of clean water and curable diseases. For us and our family, one small way to begin to reconcile these two truths is promoting fair trade.

Our desire is to connect artists in developing communities with customers in the United States and Canada. We order directly from artisan cooperatives overseas or their friends representing them here in the States. We offer their products to you. When the products sell, we reorder. When we reorder, they have consistent work. And when this process is multiplied thousands of times across the globe, these artists have a sustainable livelihood. It's pretty simple and it works.

And it is just plain fun.

We are celebrating the creativity, resourcefulness and beauty of people who live in extreme hardship. We get to tell their stories everyday. They make beautiful things, we get to delight in their products and craftsmanship. Rather than a handout, fair trade offers dignity and respect along with a means for people to provide for themselves.

Enjoy the visual feast of the goods we offer on line or in our stores.  And if you get the chance, introduce yourself to us. We would enjoy meeting you and sharing some good stories.
